âWhatâs the single most important thing I should know before going in here?â Zorah asked as she walked through the compound entrance gate. Nakaâs presence at her side kept the guards and other students from hassling her.
âThe most important thing to remember is the code of the Path: You are the center. So, act in self-interest because others will be. Take or be taken. Put yourself and your needs first in all things, that is how you will become strong.â
Her large eyes glimmered as she spoke of the code. Zorah wondered for a moment what it must be like to be a master of the Path and to live those alien concepts of self-interest. She wondered if she would ever know.
âYou will,â the woman said. âI believe in you.â
Naka led her through the grounds, passing violent battles in the yard and extreme shows of force as students competed with one another. She could feel the tameless energy filling the air, prickling her skin. The sensation was at once terrifying and exciting. She had never had to contend with such unchecked power, but she had also never had the opportunity to go unchecked herself.
Youâll do splendidly
I hope youâre right.
I am.
Nakaâs thoughts did little to reassure her.
They came to the registration office through a series of efficient hallways lit by fluorescent light bars. The halls were bare of ornament and made of concrete and tile. The office was a mess of data pads and busy staff. They signed datapads and Zorah had her measurements taken, and once finished they went to an adjoining chamber to wait with a group of other new comers. An obese, green figure swiveled towards them on his hoverseat.
âNakastasha, wonderful for you to join us.â He drooled as he spoke, his words hindered by thick cheeks. âWe do love waiting for you, so.â
Naka cradled her face, smiling sweetly.
âIâm sorry, Grout. I didnât mean to keep youâIâm sure you have so many important things to do. But, you see, when you want to find real talent, it takes time. I didnât just go about turning over rocks and take the first subject I could find.â
Her great eyes narrowed on a waifish young woman of blue skin and short silver hair. The girl cowered beneath her gaze and Grout gave a thick scoff. Any further comments were cut short by the arrival of a droid leading a robed, hooded figure. The droid turned to address them, hobbling into place.
âNew apprentices,â his voice was chirpy and his eyes flashed as he spoke, âform a line and disrobe for inspections.â
The masters stepped away and Zorah looked to Naka. The woman nodded her head, smiling and lacing her fingers. Undoing the sash about her waist, she removed the borrowed clothes and stood naked in line next to the others. She was one of ten and tried to feel comfortable in her body. Casting a glance down the line she looked over the waif, her body small but well figured and her azure nipples hard in the cold.
